We’ve all been there. You step out into the garden with a clear vision, a pair of gloves, and your trusty hand trowel, ready to make quick work of a few unwanted green intruders.
But sometimes, the garden fights back.
Lately, as I’ve been working on the slow, deeply personal restoration of my mother Janzy’s garden, I’ve come face-to-face with a formidable opponent: 25 years of aggressive, deep-seated weeds and saplings anchored in hard, stubborn Wisconsin clay. And just when we thought we had our hands full, we spent hours yesterday over at Ed and Sue’s, tackling their prize-winning hosta garden that had accumulated 10 full years of unchecked growth!

Rooted in Tradition: How Hostas Stole Our Hearts (And How an Obsession Built a Legacy)
My connection to hostas started long before I ever had a plot of land to call my own. For nearly fifteen years, I watched my mom and dad build and run their hosta business. Growing up in that environment, you don’t just learn the names of plants—you learn their personalities.
To understand where our passion comes from, though, you have to go back to the very beginning. It all started with a simple trip to the store and a handful of potted plants.
Welcome to Hosta Park: Meet the Mighty “Gigantosaurus”
If you’ve stepped foot on our farm or sent us a message lately, you know there’s one giant shade-lover that everyone can’t stop talking about. Folks walk right up to the desk, look at the foliage, and ask, “Is that plant real, or did it escape from a prehistoric island?”
We aren’t kidding when we say it’s our absolute most-requested hosta. We get anywhere from 6 to 20 inquiries a week for this big guy! Even though not every inquiry turns into a sale, the demand has been so wild that we’ve had to restock ‘Gigantosaurus’ three separate times this season alone. Spared no expense, right?
