From Etsy Sample to Static-Filled Childhood Memories: Why You Should Never Leave Your Dial (or Your Garden) Exposed

If you caught my recent live stream unveiling our new Etsy shop samples—specifically the mid-century modern cat shirt featuring those sleek, retro antenna ears—you might have heard me wander down memory lane. Sometimes a little piece of design sparks a big wave of nostalgia. Holding up that shirt brought me right back to childhood—long before bluetooth, tablets, or smart remotes existed.

Back then, television was an adventure, and getting a clear picture required actual manual labor.

The Magic (and Madness) of the Roof Antenna Dial

Before we had endless streaming at our fingertips, we had the ritual of the living room television. In the early days, it was just rabbit ears wrapped in tin foil. But eventually, my dad upgraded. He got fancy and installed a motorized antenna strapped right to the roof.

Down in the living room sat a little metal box with a satisfying, chunky dial. When you turned it, you could actually hear a mechanical click-click-click as the motor spun the antenna miles high above the house to hunt for a signal.

Naturally, to a couple of kids with zero electronics and boundless curiosity, that dial was practically an invitation. We couldn't resist. We'd sneak over, twist the dial just for the fun of that clicking sound, and completely throw the alignment out of whack.

Inevitably, Dad would sit down to watch his show, flip on the TV, and be greeted by a screen full of static, snow, and jagged lines. Let's just say a few colorful words would echo through the house that definitely cannot be repeated on a family blog: "You kids need to leave this alone! Stop touching it!"

The Garden Connection: Planting Your Roots Where the Signal is Clear

That childhood memory hit me differently while looking at our new Etsy shirt design on the live stream. It made me realize something profound about life: You should never leave a vulnerable piece of yourself out where just anyone can play with it and bring you completely out of focus.

If you're a gardener, you know this truth down in the dirt. Think about a delicate, shade-loving perennial or a newly established hosta bed you’ve poured your heart into. You can prep the soil, amend it with rich organic compost, and lovingly place each plant in the perfect spot to catch dappled morning light. But if you leave your garden beds unprotected—open to wandering pests, harsh runoff, or careless trampling—it doesn't take long for things to get completely out of focus. A stray foot or an invasive weed can choke out your hard work, leaving your garden looking like a scrambled mess of static instead of the thriving sanctuary you planned.

Just like a delicate shade garden or my dad's roof antenna, your energy needs protection and intentional boundaries:

  • Guard your boundaries: Recognize who and what has access to your peace of mind. Don't let external chaos trample your inner ecosystem.
  • Notice the static: If you find yourself constantly full of anxiety, irritation, or feeling rootbound by negativity, check who’s been "turning your dial" or meddling in your space.
  • Lock it in: Tune into your own frequency, nurture your own soil, and refuse to let outside interference scramble your picture.

Protect your signal, keep your screen clear, and maybe go check out our new mid-century cat tees in the shop if you want a fun wearable reminder to keep your rabbit ears pointed high!

What about you? What childhood memory, vintage gadget, or garden lesson always brings life back into focus for you?

A Little Bit of Everything We Love

If you've poked around our Etsy shop lately, you might wonder how we end up with such a colorful, eclectic mix of creations. The truth is, our shop is just a reflection of real life and the things we're genuinely passionate about! You'll find physical therapy shirts because we've both spent enough time as regulars at the injury rehab clinic to appreciate the humor and healing required. There are ham radio designs because Paul has always been a ham radio guy, right alongside sports photography tees celebrating his side hustle behind the camera lens. As a reading specialist, literacy and books hold a massive piece of my heart, which naturally inspires our reading shirts. Add in our hosta designs—because tending to shade plants on our five-acre property is a daily way of life—and my absolute adoration for the clean, cool aesthetic of 1950s mid-century modern style, and every single item tells a story of who we are. Drop by the shop to find a wearable piece of our world!

Thirty years in the school system leaves you with a heart full of beautiful memories—and, if you’re like me, two absolutely toasted thumbs.
Every single autumn, back in my days as a school support teacher, the physical reality of the upcoming school year would arrive in giant, heavy cardboard boxes. Thousands of them, packed to the brim with brand-new books. Slicing tape, prying back stiff cardboard, and lifting those heavy volumes left me with a parting gift of chronic tendonitis and arthritis. And of course, I wanted the job done as quickly as possible, so I’d force my hands to pick up as many textbooks as I could at a time.

For some gardeners, the ultimate peace of mind doesn’t come from guessing when it’s going to rain or feeling the soil with a thumb. It comes from real-time data, automated precision, and the beautiful synergy of nature and technology.
This is the playground of the high-tech smart gardener. They see the backyard as a living, breathing network. They are the ones who monitor their soil’s nitrogen levels from an app on their phone, automate their drip-irrigation to sync perfectly with local weather satellites, and check in on their sleeping plants via solar-powered outdoor cameras. To them, technology isn’t a distraction from the garden—it’s the ultimate tool to understand, protect, and optimize it.

Outsmarting the Slime: Which Hosta Slug Remedies Actually Work?

As I was preparing for our hosta trip to Madison and deciding which hostas to take with me to sell, I saw a problem.
There they were—tucked among the lower rows on our ground-level staging—bearing the unmistakable, ragged, skeletonized chew marks of summer’s greediest freeloaders. Slugs. And don’t worry, I won’t be bringing anything that was on the ground; only those pristine specimens raised up too high on our tables for the slugs to ever dream of reaching are making the trip to Madison.
